After travelling in space for four years, the Artificer returns to Earth. He arrives in Kansas City, and finds the M7 base and tower essentially abandoned, only maintained by Mike (the mechanic) and M.A.R.T.H.A. the android.
The only member of M7 in the last year, Duplicator-X, has been missing for three months.
Mike gives the Artificer the bios of five local independent crime fighters. The Artificer invites four of them (Helda, Dr. Weird, The Sage, and Zamus Aran) to help him track down Duplicator-X. Remarkably, the four arrive at M7 Tower in down-town Kansas City within the half-hour and agree to help Art.
Art is puzzled by Dr. Weird, who claims to use “magic”. Dr. Weird agrees to be submitted to a power analyzer, which indicates whatever powers he has can’t be defined.
They start searching for Duplicator-X, and Dr. Weird is able to ESP to locate a body. Everyone travels to King’s Park, about five miles north of M7 Tower. There, they order citizens out of the pool, and Helda digs up a body from the pool cement. The body has a Duplicator-X uniform, and also bears a badge showing “#17”.
They are on their way back to M7 Tower when Mike contacts them on the radio to alert them to a bank robbery in progress. They arrive at UMB bank, finding police officers outside, and four robbers inside. The bank was constructed about six months prior, and is actually a sealed environment constructed out of metal that resists super powers.
Mike provides information on two that are known: Woodman (mainly a power house) and Teletran (who has teleportation powers). Riot Girl pokes her head out of the bank every few minutes demanding that someone open the vault. The five heroes make their way into the bank using their own separate methods. Although calling herself Riot Girl, she ends up being non-confrontational. Riot Girl has an electronic device which seems to be able to control parts of the bank, but not the inner vault. Also inside is Sade, who obviously gets thrills from inflicting pain on others.
Once the five heroes are inside, the four villains exit the bank through a portal left open by Dr. Weird (but not before Zamus nearly vaporizes Riot Girl). A few seconds later, still sealed inside, the heroes find themselves in free-fall.
The Artificer attempts to use a plasma torch to cut out, but the metal is resistant. Sage works on trying to talk the vault into opening itself. Zamus runs to the back of the bank, runs full speed and with some sort of wall-breaking power bursts through the front doors of the bank. Zamus then floats lazily back to land. While falling, Dr. Weird thinks fast and puts the entire bank into a pocket dimension. The heroes land, and Dr. Weird is able to re-insert the bank unit back into the building… although upside down.
The bank is safe, and no civilians were hurt. Will this strange new group of heroes replace the original Magnificent 7?
